As many of you know and I guess a lot of you may not (where have you been?), Jazz re:freshed is part of the first ever New Music Biennial and we have the premier of our commission this Thursday.
New Music Biennial: What is it about?
The New Music Biennial is an international celebration, presenting a series of 20 brand new music commissions to audiences across the UK in 2014. All these commissions will also be presented at two weekend showcases in London (4 – 6 July 2014) and Glasgow (2 – 3 August 2014), coinciding with the Commonwealth Games, and BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting all 20 New Music Biennial works.
The first ever New Music Biennial is an international celebration – part of Glasgow Culture 2014, the cultural programme of the XX Commonwealth Games. It will showcase the talent of the UK’s music sector, raise the profile of composers and performers, and present a snapshot of new music across all genres.
New Music Biennial is a PRS for Music Foundation initiative, in partnership with Creative Scotland, Arts Council England and the British Council. It is presented in collaboration with BBC Radio 3, NMC Recordings, Southbank Centre and Glasgow UNESCO City of Music.
The Jazz re:freshed commission: Dynamics of Perception
The Jazz re:freshed commission is a three-part live score composition, lead by the super talented musician and composer Akwasi Mensah. Each part will be played to a scene of a short film, written and shot specifically for this project by talented film-maker & photographer Bunny Bread. The scene is played three times, using the accompanying composition to guide three nuanced tellings of the story, adopting different styles, tempos, textures, etc. The filming aspect of the commission, is an opportunity for film-maker Bunny Bread, to push the boundaries in terms of shooting techniques and storytelling, adopting unique visual styles to synergise with the original score.
The Premier
On Thursday 12th June, Jazz re:freshed will be premiering Dynamics of Perception at Mau Mau Bar, 265 Portobello Rd, London W11, 8pm (sharp). This performance will be an opportunity for a live run out of the commission before the South Bank and Glasgow performances respectively – more info will about these performances.
Note: We will be treated to a special acoustic performance for Brazilian Guitarist Davi Lannes, before the screening of Dynamics of Perception.
Football!
It hasn’t escaped us that the Dynamics of Perception premier happens to fall on the opening match of the World Cup. So, after the performances, we intend to screen the Brazil vs. Croatia game for those in attendance, with DJ’s spinning at half-time and post match.
