German violinist, singer and composer, Johanna Burnheart makes music at the point where modal jazz and techno meet.
Despite being classically trained, Burnheart’s interests gravitated first to jazz and then to the pulsating sound of Berlin’s house and techno scene. Merging the acoustic sound of her violin with electronic instrumentation, she brought her genre-hopping sound to London in 2013, becoming Guildhall School of Music’s first jazz violin undergraduate.
Now firmly established on the city’s live scene as both a regular member of Rosie Turton’s band and collaborator with the likes of Yazz Ahmed and Maisha, Burnheart released her debut album, simply called ‘Burnheart’, with Ropeadope Records in October 2020.
Featured as one of 30 best new artists for 2021 by the Guardian, the versatility of her sound suggests Burnheart’s star is only set to rise further.
